World Water Day: March 22 2009

International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. This year, the them is “Shared Water – Shared Opportunities” with special focus on transboundary waters.

The world’s 263 transboundary lake and river basins include the territory of 145 countries and cover nearly half of the Earth’s land surface. Great reservoirs of freshwater also move silently below our borders in underground aquifers.

Over the last 60 years there have been more than 200 international water agreements and only 37 cases of reported violence between states over water as cooperation, not conflict, has been the most common response to transboundary water management issues. (Click here to find out more.)

Australia is deeply affected by this issue as we work to find solutions to cope with climate change and watch transboundary waterways such as the Murray-Darling Basin where three million Australians inside and outside the Basin are directly dependent on its water.

Culligan Water is committed to creating awareness in the conservation of clean water and is involved in many water saving and environmental initiatives including the installation of free filtered water bubblers in Manly in Sydney and as a member of the The Bottled Water Alliance Culligan Water is committed to raising awareness of the high environmental and financial cost of bottled water.
