Culligan Water

Water Filters Calm the Fluoride Current

As fluoridated water begins to flow from Brisbane taps in December, Culligan Water gives consumers a choice on fluoride with distinct purification system options.

Residents and businesses in the greater Brisbane area, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast will be the first to drink the treated water. Within two years however, 80 per cent of Queenslanders will have access to fluoridated water, increasing to more than 90 per cent by 2012.

“Fluoride in drinking water exists at the molecular level and requires reverse osmosis technology to remove it. Fluoridation of the water supply is an emotional debate that may continue for years. Culligan believes in free choice and offers filters that can either remove or leave the fluoride in the filtered water,” said Tim Gordon, General Manager of Culligan Australia.

Come December, those Queenslanders who wish to retain fluoride in their water supply but also want to protect themselves from other harmful impurities may consider installing a Culligan EcoFlow system in their kitchen. Culligan’s EcoFlow retails for around $475 (fully installed) and removes harmful contaminants such as lead, chlorine, Cryptosporidium and Giardia, without removing any traces of fluoride from the water supply.

For those who wish to remove fluoride from their water, Culligan suggests installing one of their more advanced reverse osmosis filters, such as the Culligan PureFlow. The Culligan PureFlow removes fluoride and various harmful contaminants such as chlorine, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and dissolved metals and minerals like mercury and arsenic.

Many believe water fluoridation to be a positive step due to various health benefits relating to fluoride recognised by esteemed bodies such as the World Health Organisation, the Australian Dental Association and the Australian Medical Association. The benefits of drinking fluoridated water stem from the belief that fluoride can limit the amount of acid produced in the mouth and, more importantly, can also repair damage before it becomes permanent. The protection fluoride offers against tooth decay saves many Australians money on dental treatment and also means less time is spent away from school and work.

Those Queenslanders concerned about the fast-approaching fluoridation of their water supply may believe fluoride to be a harmful toxin and hence may opt to eradicate it from their drinking water supply. Some studies suggest links between the ingestion of fluoride and serious health problems such as cancer, bone fractures, birth defects, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis and allergies.

Growing cynicism about excessive bottled water costs, combined with water safety concerns have made home water filters increasingly popular with Australians. 28.6% of Australian households reported the use of water filters in 2007, a significant increase from the 18.2% that did so in 1998.

Culligan Water offers Australians professional in-house and laboratory water testing. Their drinking water systems are certified under both International and Australian Standards and hide neatly under the kitchen sink. All systems are installed by licenced plumbers and come with a five-year warranty.
