Led by two Sisters of Charity, The Nuns’ Run covered the 400 km distance from Dubbo to Darlinghurst in an effort to raise cancer awareness and crucial funds for the establishment of a new $100 million Cancer Centre within the St Vincent’s Research Precinct, Sydney. Embarking on their journey on 24 May, Sisters Helen Clarke and Leone Wittmack arrived in Sydney 5 June.
Along the way, Culligan Water provided pure filtered drinking water for participants, including The Nuns Run kick off at the Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo, Sunday 24 May. The Culligan Water Marquee welcomed the nuns, Delta Goodrem and many others for the finish of a fun run/walk in Centennial Park.
The Sisters of Charity founded both the Garvan Institute and St Vincent’s Hospital and these are the organisations now partnering to establish this new facility.
Only the Sisters covered the full route, with a series of run/walks and other fundraising events held in towns along the route. The series was held over two weeks between Sun 24 May and Fri 5 June 2009.
As one of Australia’s most awarded and successful female singer songwriters, Delta Goodrem was successfully treated for cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) on the St Vincent’s campus when she was just 18. After focusing on her return to good health and her international musical career, Goodrem has always hoped to find a way to give back to those who helped her and to play a meaningful role in securing a brighter future for people with cancer.
Delta was delighted to accept the role of Patron of the new Garvan St Vincent’s Campus Cancer Centre and feels inspired to focus attention and donations to build an incredible new state of the art facility that will help so many Australians who will be affected by cancer. Delta was thrilled to join the Sisters in Dubbo at the fun run/walk at Dubbo Zoo on 24th May and in Sydney at the Centennial Park fun run/walk on 5th June.
